The Jaecoo J5 EV is one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Australia, priced from $36,990 drive-away. It sits below most rivals on price, both petrol and electric, often by a wide margin.
Direct rivals include small SUVs like the BYD Atto 2 ($35,990), Leapmotor B10 ($41,990), MG S5 EV ($47,990), Kia EV3 ($47,600) and Zeekr X ($49,900).
Demand for EVs in Australia is at record levels, and the J5 is already gaining traction with over 2,000 orders since launching in January 2026. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular budget EV options right now.
Despite its budget price, the Jaecoo J5 EV is packed with features, befitting a more expensive vehicle.
If you are considering switching to an EV, and your budget is below $40,000, this should be at the top of your list.
Pros
Cons
✅ Very well-priced
❌ Limited physical controls
✅ Long warranty and low servicing costs
❌ Torque steer under load
✅ Spacious cabin and large boot
✅ Good technology and features for the price
The Jaecoo J5 EV has a launch price of $36,990 driveaway until 30 April 2026. It comes in a single, well-equipped variant. Most of what buyers want is included as standard.
If you are comparing options, this is where the J5 stands out against similarly priced EVs.
The J5 EV has a simple, upright SUV shape that has drawn comparisons to a baby Range Rover. Overall, it looks clean and sleek. The J5 EV sits in the small SUV segment and is about the same size as popular models like the Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V. It is compact enough for city driving but still practical and spacious for most families:
It will suit most urban buyers who want something easy to park without sacrificing space.
The interior of the J5 EV is where it shines. The cabin feels open and airy thanks to light materials and a large glass roof. Storage is well thought out, with dual wireless chargers and multiple compartments.
The 13.2-inch portrait touchscreen handles all key vehicle functions including climate control.
There are no physical buttons for air conditioning, which means drivers need to look at the screen to adjust the temperature. Satellite navigation is also missing. Most owners will use wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto instead.
Rear space is good for its size. There is good headroom and reasonable legroom. The flat floor makes the middle seat usable. Rear passengers get a USB-A port, an air vent, a fold-down armrest and door bins. Safe exit warning sensors are fitted for rear occupants, which is rare at this price.
Overall, the J5 EV’s interior is practical and well-equipped, but the tech could be easier to use with the inclusion of a few more physical controls.
The J5 EV is definitely built for comfort, not performance. Around town, it is quiet and smooth. The ride is more controlled than many rivals, and it handles bumps well.
Performance is adequate, but there are a few drawbacks, mainly torque steer under harder acceleration. As with many EVs, acceleration is brisk with a 0-100 km/hr time of 7.7 seconds.
On the highway, the J5 EV offers Level 2 autonomous driving as standard, with adaptive cruise control and active lane centring. The system is easy to use and operates smoothly on the highway. Similar to its driving dynamics around town, the J5 EV is also very comfortable to drive on longer trips.
Overall, it’s a car that should tick the key boxes for most buyers.
The J5 EV uses a 58.9kWh LFP battery with a claimed range of 402 km. Based on our experience around town, this figure is more than achievable. Like all EVs, range will drop with highway driving—expect ~300 to 330 km on a full charge.
It also includes vehicle-to-load, which allows the car to power devices via a standard power socket.
Low running costs are a key strength of the J5 EV. It comes with an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Roadside assistance is included for up to eight years (service-activated).
Capped-price servicing runs for eight years at an average of $190 per year, totalling $1,520 over the full period.
These service costs are lower than most EVs and nearly all petrol cars. Charging costs for the J5 EV will be between $169 and $1,404 per annum for the average driver.
